Book review

Is there such a thing as Hudson Valley humor? That's what radio personality Mike Bennett set out to discover in his autobiographical memoir, "Don't Pay the Ransom, I've Escaped: Memories of a Life on the Radio." The book covers everything from Halloween to Hamlet, including Bennett's own brush with death after a heart attack in 2005. It's also filled plenty of bite-sized tidbits of local legend and Hudson Valley history. "Hudson Valley humor is a very weird and completely unique blend of New York City edginess, suburban angst and rural serenity," says Bennett, who has served as co-host of WHUD's "Mike & Kacey in the Morning" show since 2000. "There's really nothing else like it. Hudson Valley humor is neither bland nor particularly biting - it's more like an excellent lobster bisque, with fresh croutons." Bennett is betting that regional humor is the next big thing - at least in the Hudson Valley. "It would be great if people all over the world bought the book, but frankly, I'd be delighted if all of the sales were in the Hudson Valley area. The Hudson Valley is where I grew up, where I went to school, where I live and where I work. As far as I'm concerned, the Hudson Valley is the most beautiful place in the world," says Bennett.
